RMS For Girls

Background

RMS is one of the oldest girls’ schools in the country. Founded by Chevalier Ruspini in 1788, the school’s original purpose was to educate the daughters of Freemasons who were unable to support their families through death, illness or disability. Today, the school accommodates pupils aged 2-18 with some day and some full weekly and flexi boarding.

The Requirement

In late 2021, RMS discovered structural problems with their existing assembly hall, and needed an alternative building for two years to enable necessary repairs to be carried out to the existing facility. RMS approached Fews to provide a turnkey solution that needed to be fully functioning by April 2022.

The Fews Solution

Fews installed a 20m x 40m structure for the main building and a 5m x 5m structure for the entrance vestibule.
Building over a two-tier area of disused tennis courts, Fews installed a level integrated cassette floor system to provide a sound structural base on which the new structures were installed. A new carpet tile was then fitted as the finished floor covering.
Given the year-round use, insulated wall panels and an inflated thermo PVC roofs were specified to help reduce the energy costs of mechanical heating and cooling.

Internally, the spaces were fitted out with bespoke MDF wall panelling with skirting and dado rail. A white flat demountable and washable roof lining was installed with lights behind to provide a diffused spread of light. Feature drum shades in the school’s brand colour were fitted to provide an added aesthetic.
Additional wall supports were added to receive the permanent projector screen and student artwork allowing the school to add their own touch of decoration.
Fews installed a complete lighting and electrical package with built-in sockets, emergency lights, mains distribution board as well as overhead radiant cassette heaters on a digital thermostat control.
